Vacancy in Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry: molecular cell biologist

In the Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics group at Utrecht University we have an opening for a molecular cell biology expert in a supporting role. The research division is heavily invested in the development and application of new, highly sensitive and robust quantitative proteomics workflows to solve diverse biological and clinical questions. We are seeking a scientist experienced in cloning, genome editing, and protein expression to help build biological tools to investigate protein structure and function. We are a diverse and inter¬national group with world-renowned expertise in the analysis of the structure and function of protein machineries and we have an excellent network of academic and industry partners.

Job description and qualifications

Molecular cell biologist
As our new molecular cell biology expert you will be an integral part of our team and assist in the general research projects, with an emphasis on mammalian cell culture, cloning, genome editing, protein expression, and protein purification. In addition, you will be responsible for the maintenance of the stock of consumables and materials, managing the use of shared facilities, and testing and improving biological assays in cell culture. We are looking for a hands-on, flexible, self-motivated, organized, open minded and creative team player. The successful candidate will have signi¬ficant experience in cell culture and CRISPR-CAS genome editing. Direct experience in managing GMO safety compliance is highly valued.  

Main Tasks
  • Support and train researchers in the group with mammalian cell culture techniques, production of engineered cell lines, and protein expression and purification
  • Develop and implement new cloning and cell culture techniques
  • Organize and manage cell culture facilities and cryo stocks
  • Maintain cell culture instrumentation including a live cell imager and fluorescent microscope
  • Support teaching obligations of the group and guide students performing molecular biology projects
Profile

You have:

  • a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field
  • a demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques like cloning, lentiviral transduction, CRISPR-CAS genome editing,  protein expression, protein purification
  • good interpersonal skills and a proven ability to communicate effectively and work well with your colleagues
  • self-initiative and you are eager to learn and to improve current workflows
  • the ability to follow instructions and take direction
  • highly organized person capable of coordinating schedules and writing SOPs
  • good verbal and written communication skills in Dutch and/or English
  • open-minded and enthusiastic team player keen to work in a multi-disciplinary and inter¬national environment
