Specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPM) are hydroxylated derivatives of omega-3 poly- unsaturated fatty acids. These lipids have been shown to be generated during acute inflammation and to contribute to the resolution process and return to tissue homeostasis. The precise sequence of events and cellular players involved in generation of SPM in vivo is still unclear. We will synthesize novel chemical probes that are based on photo-reactive docosahexaenoic acid with a ligation handle to visualize and detect proteins that interact with SPMs in vivo. Understanding the biosynthetic pathways and downstream targets of SPM represents an important step forward towards development of novel therapeutic strategies.
